Patio table made from three oak planks with live edge
Sometimes a project starts with a simple question. A friend approached me and asked, "Do you have an idea for a patio table for me?" This resulted in this compact patio table – made from three individual oak planks with a live edge, separated by steel flat iron.
Wood and steel in dialogue
With this table, the combination of wood and steel was truly intended to shine. Three individual planks with their natural live edge, separated and at the same time connected by slender flat iron. The steel provides structure, while the live edge brings the irregularity of the natural wood back into the picture.
Black-filled pores instead of fine sanding
In the first step, the table was deliberately not sanded very finely. I then filled the open pores of the oak with black 2K filler. This created an effect that connects the fine black lines in the wood with the steel of the flat iron – matching the material, almost like a recurring motif across the entire tabletop.
Oiled and outdoor-proof
After sanding, the table was oiled with Rubio Monocoat Natural – natural, matte, without plastic sheen. For outdoor use, the final step is a sealing with Clean Armor, UV/LED-cured, which makes the wood permanently weather-resistant.
